About HarBUG

We are a group of cyclists campaigning to make it easier to cycle to Harwell Science and Innovation Campus and to improve facilities for cyclists on site.

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus is in the South Oxfordshire countryside close to the Berkshire downs and the Ridgeway National Trail. It is halfway between the towns of Didcot and Wantage.

Sustrans route 44 runs between Didcot & Wantage and passes the Harwell campus providing a virtually traffic free route to work from those towns. Other routes provide links to Abingdon and Oxford using Sustrans route 5.

We maintain regular contact with site management and the County Council so please let us know your views and we can pass them on.

If you cycle to work at the Harwell campus or are thinking about it then please join us and add weight to our campaign!

To keep in touch with what is going on please join the HarBUG listserver an email discussion group which makes it easy to share news and ideas with over 100 other cyclists on site.

HarBUG's policy on Segregated Cycle routes

Given the sensitivities surrounding the creation of segregated routes, paths shared with pedestrians and new, off-road, surfaced routes we have agreed the following policy:

The Harwell Bicycle User's Group supports the creation of segregated cycle routes where they meet the following conditions:

a) the existence of a segregated route must not compromise the right of cyclists to use the road;

b) the segregated route must offer clear advantages for cyclists in terms of meeting desire lines for journeys, travel time and improved safety;

c) the proposed route must not lead to significant conflict with pedestrians or horse riders;

d) construction work and materials should not have an adverse effect on natural habitats nor the visual appearance of sensitive areas;

e) traffic volumes and conditions on the road make it impossible to provide equivalent provision on the road more cost-effectively.
