I noticed the same this morning and was very disappointed about the lack of thought. The path has been barely usable anyway due to overgrowing vegetation, particularly to the South of the new lights, where there is no space for oncoming pedestrians or cyclists to be passed. Now I don’t think I’ll ever use that section, joining the path from Stonehill lane.

Andy – Local councils have a Duty of Care to you as a road user, since this dual-use path sounds like an adopted highway for cyclists like you and me, and that Duty of Care should extend here too. However, thus far I’ve only ever heard of councils being in breach in the event of damage to the rider and / or cycle due to defects in the fabric of the road (potholes, potbumps, the usual suspects).
Persoally, I agree with you in the sense that a little more consideration and planning (perhaps even a H&S Risk Assessment) should have been given prior to the shelter being put up. Under these circumstances, I would also be writing letters / e-mails to the powers that be, making a real “squeaky wheel” of myself until they at least acknowledged my complaint.
Best of luck – Hugh, Public Health England.

For information – There has been lots of discussion about this path on http://www.fixmystreet.com including input from council staff.

Andy – Do you have any photos of the new shelter and the name of the County Councillor for that area? HarBUG can send an email to the County Council to see why they placed this shelter here without any thought about users of the path. Please send info. to web@harbug.org.uk.

Some good news. It seems the bus shelter has been now been removed, as I discovered today on the commute in. See fixmystreet for updated images. I wonder if OCC will make any comment on the matter, and the shared use path in general.
