Sustrans 544 Route Closure From Upton

From the Monday 3rd March until, and including, Friday 7th March Hagbourne Hill Road from West Hagbourne and Chilton Road from Upton will be closed, up to the A34 roundabout at Chilton .

This means that the Sustrans route 544 route will be cut off for the week.

There is an alternative using a track from Upton to Chilton. The track starts from the A417 next to the George and Dragon pub. If you are planning to use the track note that the A34 underpasses in Chilton are flooded so you will need to use the road crossing or the footbridge.

The track is not suitable for road bikes, who should go via Harwell village and Rowstock roundabout (the Winnaway is also not suitable for road bikes).

      Those who have not used the back road to Chilton should note that the green arrow “Alternative Route” points to Flinty Hill (as I call it) where some people have come a cropper on the descent (I came as close as you can get without actually coming off) and the ascent is unenjoyable. It is passable on a hybrid. The rest is OK, if a little mucky in the wet…

      That’ll be the Lynch Way. I have done it on a road bike – in summer, bright daylight and dry, downhill. Walked the road bike uphill, especially past the really steep bit near the bottom. Crawled up on an off-road bike on the granny ring – as Bob says, not enjoyable. I’ve also come a cropper once or twice… Although the track past Prospect Farm to Alden Farm isn’t marked as public right of way, many people (cyclists, dog walkers, runners) do use that track, then it’s tarmac (albeit potholed) all the way back down to Upton from Alden Farm. As I say, not public right of way, so at your own risk etc…

        Don’t use the tarmaced Alden Farm route as it is completely flooded around the farm area and impassable. They have had to dig a drainage ditch across the track between Alden Farm and Prospect Farm to drain (This isn’t a public right of way but as Tracey A said, people do generally use it). There are many HUGE puddles across the whole width of the bridleways near the farms, 20m long and ankle deep.

      Do you mean the route from Upton to Alden Farm? I was planning on taking that route tomorrow, then continuing to Gore Hill Farm and up onto the Ridgeway?

      If you go on google maps, Alden Farm Livery and stables on Hollow Way is flooded. You couldn’t carry on along Hollow Way heading south unless your happy cycling through mini lakes at least ankle deep and quite long. I cut down to Prospect Farm, where everything got worse and had to jump a muddy drainage ditch, so don’t know whether if you carry on along Hollow Way it would get worse or better, but i’m avoiding the area tomorrow!
