New Thomson Avenue Entrance

 

We have been asked for our comments on the proposals for changes to the Campus Thomson Avenue entrance.

 

The plans have been drawn up by the County Council and include a three arm roundabout with a cycle bypass. Plans can be seen here: https://consultations.oxfordshire.gov.uk/consult.ti/HarwellCampusEntranceImprovement/consultationHome

      It seems inevitable and reasonable from a cyclist’s point of view….except that (from anyone’s point of view) the indicated bus stop in the carriageway is beyond daft! There should be a layby bus stop like the one opposite and to the north

      I’m not sure what significant need the “cycle bypass” is serving. It is only “active” when there is a heavy flow out of Thomson Avenue turning right to go south without this being regularly interrupted by traffic heading north to interrupt that flow. This is relatively uncommon and is most likely at the end of the day when there will also be few cyclists approaching from the north. Combine this with the non-layby bus stop and you will have cyclists needing to merge back in to the main carriageway by a road-crossing pinch-point, then potentially move further right to overtake a stationary bus, all in a very short stretch of road.

      It’s great that cycling has been taken into consideration at the roundabout. I would be interested to know if a curb can be laid between the segregated cycle bypass and the road to divide the cycle lane and the road. I am concerned that traffic turning right out of Thomson Ave will drift onto the cycle lane. This would be the same for traffic going straight on at the roundabout and driving around right turning traffic into Thomson Ave. The curb would stop encroachment and also keep cyclists in the cycle lane and not taking the racing line. Perhaps safer for cyclists and for drivers.

      Also, the bus stop should perhaps be moved further along the road and away from the junction but I suspect cost is the main factor as to not doing this.

      I dont use the path at the bus stop to ride along as I go along the path by the pavillion. It is safer, quieter, and not a bump in sight from damaged path.

        Personally, I don’t see any advantage for cyclists to the “cycle bypass” at all.

        If you’re going South, you going to be just as quick sticking to the main carriageway and at least you would still have right of way. If traffic was stuck going South, the bypass will only encourage cyclists to cut inside cars/lorries before the roundabout and then have to rejoin the carriageway with accelerating traffic!

      So long as we are still able to cycle along the path by the pavilion this will have minimal impact for me. Far safer down there.
