New Science Vale Cycle Map

Sustrans has been engaged by the County Council to update the Science Vale Cycle Map, and Sustrans would like HarBUG member’s help improve the next edition of the map, which is due to be published in the Spring.

An interactive Science Vale map portal has been set up, for the purpose, which can be found here: https://communitymaps.sustrans.org.uk/ScienceVale.php

Full instructions are given in the user guide, via the icon on the right hand side of the interactive map, including details of how to register and add comments or suggested changes to the map and in particular:

  • Corrections to the map, based on your local knowledge
  • Recommendations for additions or deletions to routes currently shown on the map
  • Suggestions for additional features not currently shown on the map

Please put forward your individual responses directly onto the Sustrans map as set out in the user guide – no later than 22nd January, 2016.

The routes shown in green on the map have been transcribed from the present Science Vale map; those shown in blue are from Sustrans’ mapping, which has been compiled from local input over the years, and is in need of updating. Please feel free to amend any of this route information – we will then check out suggestions, reconcile all the data, and feed consolidated amendments back to the County Council. We hope that the end result will be an improved and more useful map.

Sustrans have been commissioned to update the Science vale Cycle map and would like HarBUG’s input to ensure the map is accurate and up to date.

Strikes me there is lot of work to do in the Wantage and Grove area if we want to make this complete. I’m struggling to see how complete it aims to be – where can I get a copy of the original Science Vale cycle map (the one that sustrans have been commissioned to update)?

The original Science Vale cycle map is the on-line Sustrans map in the link. So there is no officially published map at the moment. We can only put on known missing parts and corrections. We should try to get it as accurate as possible and we may be able to use the information to push the County Council to complete missing links and improve crossing points etc. For example in Grove there are paths which are officially shared use paths but they are not marked or signed, if they appear on the map then we can argue that they should be signed and marked.
