House of Commons – Cycling Debate

On the 2nd September there will be a House  of Commons debate about cycling. HarBUG has sent a letter to local MP, Ed Vaizey to encourage him to attend the debate.

Although a letter has been sent by HarBUG you can also send an email / letter asking him to attend via the CTC website link: Tell your MP to ‘Speak up for Cycling’ You don’t have to be a member of the CTC to use their template email / letter.

The letter was sent with a briefing paper about cycling: Cycling debate – briefing for MPs

The HarBUG letter reads:

‘Get Britain Cycling’ – Commons Debate 2nd September 2013.

Dear Mr. Vaizey,

HarBUG (Harwell Campus Bicycle Users Group) represents cyclists who commute to and from the Harwell Campus. As local MP we were would appreciate it if you could find the time to attend the Commons debate on the parliamentary ‘Get Britain Cycling’ inquiry report. The debate is being held on the 2nd September in the evening. We understand that, as a minister, you are very busy especially as it is the first day back after the summer recess, but we believe this debate has an important local element as well as being in the national interest.

The Science Vale area is growing; towns and business parks are expanding which is good news for the local economy but it will put a strain on the transport network. We believe that building good cycle infrastructure in Didcot and Wantage / Grove will play a significant part in reducing congestion and keeping all traffic flowing freely. The Government has made a welcome and important step forward by recently announcing investment in 8 cities (including Oxford) but we would like to see additional investment for all parts of the U.K.

We hope you will be able back the APPCG’s call for the funding needed to substantially boost cycling to the levels common among our European neighbours and the Prime Minister’s call for a ‘Cycling Revolution’.

Please find enclosed a briefing paper concerning the cycling debate.

Your sincerely

HarBUG
