For those wishing to join up with the group but not starting in one of the listed locations, what route is being taken? Roads all th way, ickneild way/ winaway?? perhaps a map would have been useful, I happen to know where the pavilion is but do a Google search and it is not listed. maybe stfc should add it?. asking around quite a few people have no idea where this is other than assuming its on campus. perhaps a map would have been useful.

      Thanks for the feedback.
The routes for the group rides are as follows:
      – Didcot on Sustrans route 544 via Upton and Hagbourne Hill. Nearly all off road apart from Upton village and Chilton Hill out of Upton for about a mile.
      – Wantage / Grove via Sustrans route 544, on back roads and off road tracks.
      – Abingdon via Sustrans route 5, then through Milton village, Milton Interchange, Milton Heights and the A4130.

The location of the pavilion (Thomson Avenue Entrance) has been included on the posters and on the website.
We will have a look at putting more information on the website for the Bike Week Cycle to Work day in June.

      Hi!

There are a couple of us looking to cycle from Oxford to Harwell tomorrow. Last year we took a route that ran along the Thames Pathway, past Radley, past a water treatment works somewhere in Abingdon, briefly through Milton Park, then past the Milton Interchange roundabout and onwards towards Harwell.

There are a couple of hairy bits on the Oxford leg of the journey (especially for a road bike!), so I was wondering if there are any good routes for getting to Abingdon or Didcot and onwards.

      Many thanks!

        Hi Victoria,

Cycling to and from Oxford I usually stay on the roads and go via Kennington, Radley, Abingdon, Drayton and Steventon.

Abingdon is nicer if you go through the arch by the Guildhall in the centre and via East St Helens Street, along the road by the Thames and then along Preston Road to join the road to Drayton.

        Hi Vickie,

I’m leading the ride from Abingdon tomorrow starting at 7:40 from the market hall. If you want to join us, let me know and I’ll make sure we hang on a bit if you’re not there.

When I cycled from Oxford, I used to cycle out through Littlemore and Sandford, cross the river at Sandford lock, then take the little lane into Radley. It all depends where you’re starting from I suppose.

        Hi Sarah and Will,

I cycle from Oxford sometimes, and find it’s great through Radley (main road), through Abingdon to Drayton Road. On my mountain bike I used to then go to Milton Park roundabout and east along the A4130 towards Didcot to Peep O Day/Cow Lane, to Harwell village and the Winnaway route.
However, on my new road bike, I’ve yet to find a good route with suitable surfaces after Drayton Road because I try to avoid the road through Milton Hill and Rowstock roundabout as I find the traffic often overtakes dangerously. I usually end up going a long way round to Sutton Courtney, via Didcot powerstation and train station, and Upton to avoid the worst of the traffic. I guess this is fine but if anyone has an alternative, shorter, quiet route from, say, Sutton Courtney for a road bike, I’d be happy to hear it.
        Cheers,
        Clare

There are detailed maps and descriptions for each route on the HarBUG website.
Hover over the ‘Cycle Routes’ tab – a list of routes will appear – click on the one you want.
Each route description includes link to map – each map is drawn so that the route ends exactly at the Pavilion!
Just to confirm, the Pavilion is at the Thomson Avenue Campus entrance, just off A4185 road. Look for a wooden building with veranda, and clock on top, located at the corner of the sports pitches, just behind the trees alongside A4185 road. There is a bus stop outside – but arriving that way won’t qualify you for a free breakfast!
      Hope to see you tomorrow.
