Hi HARBUG. Hav e collisions been happening between RCah and DLS that has prompted this from H&S? I hope it was nothing serious.

      9. PROSPECT & EMPLOYEES REPRESENTATIVE’S ISSUES / AOB

NG – Raised the issue of cycling between Diamond House and RC@H. It was previously suggested that staggered barriers may be a solution.

RAL SHE Group have viewed the area. The area in question is actually a footpath and cyclists should not be cycling on this. Therefore a request has been made to RAL Estates and Operations to have a Cyclists Dismount sign erected on the edge of the path by the turning circle of R92. To note STFC are responsible for this area of land.
To note, the footpath leads directly onto a pedestrian crossing on the diamond ring road.

Is it really necessary to have a cyclists dismount sign? As resident of the RCaH I have never heard of a problem here, and whether it is formally a footpath or not, there is a lot of room. If there has been an a collision there it must surely be due to inconsiderate/carelessness, rather than the simple fact that there was a cyclist. As such is a sign going to make a difference? Is there any evidence that banning cycling in places where considerate cycling is safe does any more than stopping those who would take care anyway?

There was one incident where a cyclist went through the path and pulled straight onto the Diamond Ring Road in front of a car, according to the incident report. There was no accident but it was recorded as a near miss.
Harbug suggested putting a ‘give way’ sign up or a bollard to slow cyclists down but this was rejected as it is a footpath.
This is a shortcut through to Diamond from the RAL main gate so I think it will still be used. Maybe a ‘Cyclist Dismount’ sign will signal to cyclists to slow down. i think most cyclists have similar views on ‘Cyclists Dismount’ signs.

I regularly see cyclists shoot through the path into the road without looking. This is observed almost daily while locking my bike up.
