Dears,
I just bought a bike, from a RAL colleague, and went for my first ride last sunday 1 may;
it seems unbelievable what happened to me!
4 PM I was coming from the sandford locks entering kennington road in direction of the radley village;
a white van (a ford transit like) slowed down while overtaking me and a guy on the passenger side leaned out pushing me off the road;
I could stop in the grass without falling to the ground, it was good, but a very bad experience;
I could get a partial reading of the plate;
I went to the Abingdon police station just to report this accident and provide the information I could get.
well, they were not very interested, they just told me it could happen, and very hardly they could proceed with a partial plate number, also they told me that crimes/offence must be reported only by phone calling the 101;
then I checked out the web and I found that such kind of “jokes” are getting popular…
guys the world is not perfect;
I did know anything about such additional unnecessary risks that a cyclist must take into account while on the road, anyway, now I know;
hope share information could help
take care
cheers -

Hi,
I am sorry for this incident that happened to you on your first ride. My web search on the matter prompted me to buy a camera I always use while cycling as well another one I use while driving. It is very difficult to focus on details as descriptions, plate numbers, date/time/location during an incident. I had similar experience with the police even when supplied with video evidence – I am afraid it is a matter of time before people start taking matters into own hands. Perhaps we can as a group get in touch with the authorities and see what can be done – while police surely has a very busy workload, identification of ‘pranksters’ as such requires close collaboration.
Cheers,

Hi there, Thanks for letting us all know. I do hope you aren’t put off cycling by a very unpleasant experience. For what it’s worth I’ve been cycling for many years and never had anything of this sort.

Hello, hope you are ok.
This type of incident isn’t new. See this report from 2006:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/oxfordshire/5171552.stm
I encourage you to report the incident using the 101 number, if you have not already done so. If there are repeated ed incidents which are reported, the police are more likely to take action.
Interestingly, I was passing through Goole in Yorkshire last week and saw a large “Share The Road” poster featuring a cyclist and a motorist. Perhaps that kind of education is required here too?

Also very sorry to hear about this, what a stupid thing to do.
Given the poor support that was received from the police, how about writing to our MP to share frustration and see if the police would reconsider and put some effort into identifying a white van in the area with part number plate of XXXXX, there might not be too many of them?
Perhaps if an email was sent from HARBUG by someone to the MP it might get a response? I for one would like to see this person punished for their actions and made an example of.
After all the government is always banging on about wanting to increase cycle use.Chris
