Cycle to Work Day 2015

Usually this time of year we (HarBUG) runs the first of two Cycle to Work days.

We have decided to suspend the Cycle to Work days for this year. The Cycle to Work days are primarily to encourage people to try cycling to work but there seems to be little merit in doing this when:

  • The main routes (from Didcot and Wantage) are in such a state that only very keen cyclists (like us) will use them. None of them are really suitable unless you have an off road bike. The Winnaway has deteriorated even further and at the Campus end where it meets the A4185, it is very trickey to get past without going into a pothole. The Hagbourne Hill track, at the Campus end, has been covered with a thick layer of mud, which has now solidified and makes very uncomfortable riding. The last stretch of Sustrans route 544 from Wantage, once again at the Campus end, has been a problem for many years.
  • There will be (hopefully) upheaval on the routes as they are rebuilt or upgraded. This may result in some routes being shut to allow works to be carried out. If you are new to cycling this may put you off. However this should be short term pain for long term benefit. There will also be another seven week period of the Hagbourne Hill road to Chilton being closed.

If there is real progress in improving the routes we will organise a ‘grand opening’ of the Winnaway later on in the year, but I realistically don’t think this will be until next year.

I know a lot of people like the Cycle to Work day as it is the only time we get to meet up as cyclists and we are sorry if this is disappointing. We will organise them again next year with upgraded routes.

HarBUG has decided to suspend the Cycle to Work days this year. This is due to the poor state of the ‘off road’ routes and future upheaval on the routes as they are rebuilt and upgraded.

The reason I started cycling to work this past year (even throughout winter) was thanks to the Cycle to Work day . I use a hybrid with road tyres and manage (Wantage 544).

As long as the pace is slow at the rough bits the Cycle to Work event shouldn’t be a problem. Rather than cancelling it could it be postponed til after the roadworks?

Hello I agree with the last comment. I use a hybrid with winter tyres from Wantage. With the increase in popularity of cycling generally I think it would be a shame to cancel the event. Perhaps postpone would be better.
Now I’m more confident (e.g. got it down to a respectable time!) I would be very happy to perhaps lead a group of new women cyclists from Wantage – may be a nice thing to suggest and provide encouragement and support to a group who may not have considered it before?

      Hi,

I have been using route 544 both from Didcot and from Wantage regularly for the last 4 years, and I have never seen them before in a worst state. Extreme caution is needed even under ideal weather and there are lots of points where an (in) experienced rider can come a cropper and/or wreck his bike/tyres.

I have been cycling from Grove along the 544 for 2.5 years and I agree with Dimitris about the state. Serious potholes and ruts in many places – I nearly gave up a couple of months ago after cycling in all weathers and seasons until now. But if it is dry and light it may not put off a beginner who is happy to take it slowly.

P.S. If you want a cyclist on Grove Parish Council, please vote for me!

Sorry. If you’re interested, here’s the corrected link from my previous post.
